Many of us who grew up in the 1970s/1980s seem to have this same group memory: Your elementary school probably had a film closet, with a clattering projector, and, at least once a year the teacher would drag out that 1956 film THE RED BALLOON. Which I actually found a little scary. It's a sentient balloon TRYING TO BE ALIVE! KILL IT WITH FIRE!

Informal poll: How many also saw that film PADDLE-TO-THE-SEA, about the guy who carves the little wooden canoe and Indian, leaves it on a snowbank, when the snow melts it slides into a creek, into a river, through the Great Lakes, over Niagara Falls, and eventually out to the ocean, where a lighthouse-keeper finds it. It's on YouTube here.
