Liberty Street Robot Supply & Repair, Ann Arbor, Michigan

July 28th, 2015 (08:43 am)

In downtown Ann Arbor, Michigan, there's this toy robot store,
Liberty Street Robot Supply & Repair. http://onwardrobots.com/

but it's sort of a front for a non-profit writing lab for kids 6-18.

826 National has differently-themed stores in different cities.
* The Greater Boston Bigfoot Research Institute
* Wicker Park Secret Agent Supply Co. (Chicago)
* The Museum of Unnatural History Gift Shop (Washington DC)
* The Time Travel Mart (Los Angeles, two locations)
* Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. (Brooklyn NY)
* 826 Valencia Pirate Store (San Francisco)

Get Your Ass To Mars

May 24th, 2015 (10:29 pm)

I enjoy armchair space geocaching. Finding weird things people have found in NASA photos of Mars, and then trying to locate precise longitude/latitude for them in Google Earth (Mars).

It can be difficult because the tinfoil hat Mars buffs tend to rotate photos 180 or 90 degrees from Martian north without explanation, almost as if they don't want anyone duplicating their findings.

But anyway, there's this photo taken in 2008 by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter:

The Jet Propulsion Lab has these images as JPEGs, but they have much more detailed photos in .JP2 format, several hundred megabytes large.

It took me awhile to figure out how to view .JP2 files (Thanks, Steve and Jeff!). And the folks on the CosmoQuest forum.
IrfanView: http://www.irfanview.com/ Plugin for JP2: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/IrfanView-PlugIns/1099412658/1
allowed me to zoom in on the .JP2 files.

There's a monolith on Mars (Yes, I know, it's a natural formation, but it's still cool)!

Posts on the web about it like this one:

I finally figured out it's in Google Earth (Mars) at roughly 7.233 S, 267.365 E. Or maybe just a little south of there.

New Horizons Pluto flyby July 14, 2015

July 14th, 2014 (07:40 am)

One year from today, July 14, 2015, the NASA New Horizons space probe makes its Pluto flyby, with some ashes of Pluto discoverer Clyde Tombaugh [1906-1997] aboard - the first human remains launched towards interstellar space (Artist’s conception).

Which is why, 10,000 years from now, aliens send a clone army of Clyde Tombaughs against us.

Kerbal Space Program: Launching a gigantic soccer ball to the Kerbin Antarctic

July 13th, 2014 (07:11 am)

In tribute to the World Cup, Kerbal Space Program released its first official mod:
Kerbin Cup, which adds big soccer balls - Kerbal-sized and rocket-sized, to the game.

What can one do with a gigantic soccer ball in Kerbal Space Program? I thought I'd try to launch it to the Kerbin South Pole.
